Everything!

So to reflect on two major points. First, I worked with two fifth grade girls on translating a parent letter discussing the Camelot letter program. I also worked with one of the girls with homework. We had a few misunderstandings including knight versus night and needed to explain those which was quite interesting to explain. We also discovered that dandelion wasn't in this young students English vocabulary so I explained that as well. It was incredible watching her learn and process new ideas…See More

Impact Lives Event

The Big Day finally came! What an amazing experience! After so many months of talk, to be actually able to witness and participate in the event was incredible. With such an early start, I figured the day would just drag on. Man was I wrong! The day just flew by. After the first shift, the table leaders started to hit their stride. It was my job to fill all of the totes of rice and soy beans for each table. Each bag weighed 50 pounds, so needless to say I got my workout for the day. One of the…See More

Reflection of the Week at Camelot

The week at Camelot seemed to work out wonderful for the children and the teachers. Many of the students seemed to enjoy the lesson (and especially getting to sit next to their friends). The slide with the skinny child that stated the number of people who died per minute seemed to touch many of the children. They related that child to themselves as he looked as though he could be their age.A few of the students had helped the previous week with putting together the booklets. I noticed these…See More

Impact Lives lessons

I'm hoping to hear from all you teachers about the individual sessions--some interesting comments or reactions or memorable responses you heard from your students. I think that's a fun part of teaching--reflecting on what students said and pondering how everything flowed, the group dynamics, etc. Each session I'm sure had its own quirks and joys--another fun part of teaching. In the first one that I observed I was amazed at a little 5th grader who not only was taking meticulous notes in the…See More

Buttons

Thank you to the girls who were teaching this morning! About being flexible ...without the buttons. I'm sorry that I didn't get them there sooner. From what little I heard this morning you guys did a great job staying on task, answering questions, and dealing with different issues children brought up. And finally, the best part of watching it, you were having fun! Great Job!See More

Camelot 4th and 5th Grade student reflections on the Camelot: Impact Lives project...

All Camelot 4th and 5th graders who received instruction from SDSU students completed a short reflection at the end of the class explaining what they had learned in the last 40-50 minutes. After reviewing their comments and discussing Camelot student reaction during the lessons, the SDSU students determined that their instruction had been successful and that Camelot…

Quotations from the "Impact Lives" Thank You Letter to the Brookings Community...

"We want to express our appreciation to everyone in Brookings and the surrounding communities who helped make the March 27th Impact Lives food packing event for Haiti a success. The food (285,150 meals) was shipped to Haiti as our funding needs have been met. We collected a little over $52,000. The total cost was $51,705.20.
